To spork or not to spork, that is the question. When heading out camping, there seems to be a voracious appetite when it comes to spork culture. It’s one of those items that is something of a must-have. Besides, we aren’t neanderthals, and we especially don’t like eating with our hands (although the idea seems rather manly). The idea all started in the 19th century, and got its name from the mating of a spoon and a fork. Also known as a foon, many brands have developed different designs, utilizing a variety of materials, all fighting for top honors. A common material, and popular with the backcountry goers (including us) is the titanium version. Seen in the Snow Peak, Light My Fire, Vargo, and GSI sporks; they offer incredible strength to weight ratio that is comparable to none. Of course they come in other standard materials such as stainless steel and co-polyester combo. The Spork comes in many shapes and sizes ranging from a traditional one piece, to a two piece which folds in half or retracts into itself for easy storage. Then there are sporks that are a little less traditional, including a variety of multi-tools such as the CRKT Eat’N Tool and S.H.O.V.E.L. Lastly, there are those that include additional accessories like the GSI Outdoors Kung Foon that are sure to save the day. We have gathered some of our fav’s (in no particular order) that are sure to please the pickiest of connoisseurs.
